Canadian Nick Taylor won the Sony Open in Hawaii with another dramatic overtime victory.
It was a third straight victory requiring the extra holes for Taylor. We will obviously remember his overtime triumph at the Canadian Open in 2023.
On Sunday, the Unifolié representative was battling with Nico Echavarria for the winner’s trophy.
Both golfers recorded a birdie on their first overtime hole, so that for a third time in a row, they had to play the 18th hole of the course. Taylor looked in bad shape after teeing off on the par-five into a sand trap and followed it up with a shot into the fairway away from the green. However, he managed a superb approach to put pressure on his rival.
After lacking aggression on his third shot, Echavarria missed his putt for birdie which opened the door for Taylor and the latter did not miss his chance for victory.
Taylor fought his way into overtime with an eagle on the 18th hole when he sent his approach shot deep into the hole. He thus handed in a card of 65 during the final round, a withdrawal of five strokes under par, in order to share the lead of the ranking with Nico Echavarria. The latter also played 65 before the extra holes.
The American JJ Spaun started the last day in control of the event. He could not do better than a 68 and he completes the top-3.
