Things are going very well for the Canadian these days.
The team has nine wins in its last two games, plus a shootout loss, despite facing several good teams.
This happy streak notably earned him the opportunity to return in the mix by being only two points behind, with a game in hand, on the Blue Jackets and the last place in the series.
If CH’s recent performances allow fans to hope for post-season hockey for the first time since 2021, the advanced statistics site MoneyPuck.com gives the Habs a 19.9% chance of making the playoffs.
To make its calculations, the site is based on 100,000 simulations of the remainder of the season which take into account several variables such as calendar difficulties as well as several advanced statistics. You can find explanations of their method here: for nerds of stats, it’s candy!
So according to these calculations, at this moment, the Canadian would have less than a one in five chance of reaching the playoffs.
What is interesting is that the site also gives a 59.5% chance of making the playoffs to the Ottawa Senators, despite the team having a similar record to ours (43 points in 41 games for the Sens against 44 in 44 for the CH).
Seems to me like that’s a good probability spread for two teams that have a similar record at mid-season.
It’s also much more than the Boston Bruins who currently occupy first place among drafted teams who are given a 38.2% chance of participating in the spring tournament.
In fact, even the New York Islanders (29.2%) and Philadelphia Flyers (21.3%) have better odds than us if we look at teams in playoff battles.
What does this mean for CH? Absolutely nothing!
The way the team has been playing recently, I think we can put the odds in the trash as long as the players stay healthy.
Moreover, the Canadian will play a dozen games against opponents currently involved in the race for the playoffs between now and the end of the season.
Three of these clashes take place against the Sens, two in Ottawa and one in Montreal, and all will have a significant influence on the final ranking.
