Hockey: Friborg succeeded in its change of coach, not Geneva

Genève-Servette lost on Saturday on its ice against Fribourg-Gottéron (1-2). This result does not reflect the appearance of a duel dominated by the Dragons. The Eagles certainly paid for their lack of freshness during their fourth game in five days.

“This calendar is nonsense. There is not a single league in the world where you play 17 matches in 31 days, criticized Marc Gautschi. But hey, we shouldn’t make excuses.”

The GSHC sports director refers to his team’s balance sheet since the change of coach on December 28. Dismissed from his position, Jan Cadieux was replaced by his deputies Yorick Treille and Rikard Franzen.

Under their leadership, the Grenat have only collected 8 units in 7 matches, an average of points per match (1.14) lower than that of Jan Cadieux (1.34). “For the moment, this change is not a success,” recognizes Marc Gautschi.

Quite the opposite of Fribourg-Gottéron, where the psychological shock worked perfectly. Since Lars Leuenberger replaced Pat Emond on December 22, the Dragons have taken 14 units in 6 outings and moved closer to the top 6.

How to explain such a difference between the two clubs? “If I knew that, I would be sports director of the Toronto Maples Leafs, not of Genève-Servette,” said Marc Gautschi.

The cause probably lies in the entry on the scene of a man from outside. At Les Vernets, with the promotion of assistants, nothing has really changed and continuity has been advocated. The arrival of Lars Leuenberger turned everything upside down at the BCF Arena, where a real revival is perceptible.

“We have regained confidence,” simply sums up captain Julien Sprunger. And it shows on the ice. Is the addition of a new voice to the staff the way forward for Genève-Servette?

“It’s a solution,” admits Marc Gautschi. I have always said that this situation was an interim situation that needed to be re-evaluated. I will still do interviews and I will make a decision at the end of the week on the direction to follow for the rest of the season.

Until then, the semi-final first leg of the Champions League against Zurich, Wednesday at Les Vernets, will allow the Genevans to take their minds off things. Or to get tired and dive a little deeper.
