In an interview with L’Equipe, Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios talks about the doubts surrounding his return as well as the bad boy reputation that sticks to him. “I don’t care,” he says, satisfied with what his career has brought him. Millions of dollars that he intends to spend to enjoy a retirement in the sun within one or two years.
A few hours before his entry into contention at the Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios projected himself towards what his life would be after tennis, far from the sport, he who is attempting an unexpected return to the summits this year, after two white seasons.
“I’m not going to plan anything, but my goal has always been to retire around the age of 30,” he explained to L’Equipe. “I would like to have a family by then, spend time with them and enjoy all the efforts I’ve made. In ten years, I see myself having a big family, four or five children, and smoking a big joint in the Bahamas, maybe playing video games, I won’t stop. I never work hard enough at this. moment, in ten years I will no longer work.”
The former 13th player in the world (the best ranking of his career, reached in 2016), finalist of the Wimbledon tournament in 2022, has amassed nearly $13 million in winnings during his career on the ATP circuit. Nick Kyrgios believes he has made his sport more attractive by embellishing it with his unpredictable play and above all a personality which expresses itself outside of established frameworks.
“No matter the controversies”
“I’m important to this sport because I’m totally different from other tennis players. My style of play is unique, I don’t have a coach and I attract new fans.” His reputation as a bad boy? “I don’t care. I’ve made millions and millions of dollars, I can support my family, my girlfriend and my friends. I’m healthy. My career is a great success. Little no matter the controversies, this sport has given me a lot.”
Endowed with a character at odds with that of the Australian, Richard Gasquet, exceptional guest of Stephen Brunch this Sunday, spoke on RMC of the controversial personality of his “friend” Nick Kyrgios: “I have known him forever, it’s someone I really like. People like that are missing on the circuit. It’s refreshing to not only see machines. He’s someone I really like who has a lot of talent. is a very nice guy, I hope he stays on the circuit as long as possible. When he is there, the stadiums are full, everyone wants to see him play, and me first.”
Affected in the abs since the Brisbane tournament where he made his big return to competition at the beginning of the month, both in singles (defeat in the first round against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard) but also in doubles, associated with Novak Djokovic (defeat in the 2nd round), Nick Kyrgios should be able to enter the court next night against the Briton Jacob Fearnley (in 4th rotation on the John Cain Arena), for the greatest pleasure of an audience that just wants to vibrate alongside him.
