Strong on its supports, Hamza Igmane also shines with its laser vision and a first touch of the ball that makes everything look easy. Especially since the Moroccan center forward, resident of Glasgow Rangershas recovered from the injury which delayed his start in the Scottish championship.
Author this season of 11 buts and 2 assists in 22 matches, including 7 achievements during his last eight tenures, the native of Témara becomes a serious candidate for a call-up to the national team. It would be a logical continuation for the winner of the CAN U23. But in a gaming industry where competition is fierce, where Ayoub El Kaabi, Soufiane Rahimi and Youssef En-Nesyri have made their mark, does he have the means to shake up the hierarchy established by the national coach Walid Regragui ? Element of response.
The Rangers, a relevant choice
Hamza Igamane revealed himself in the jersey of his training club, the FAR of Rabat. The 22-year-old striker won two major titles there : the championship and the Throne Cup, before filling his trophy room with a continental coronation with the national team U23. A year later, he did not hesitate to export his talent to continue his progress.
A thoughtful choice, even if it did not take him long to accept the Scottish club’s proposal. “When my manager told me that a legendary club like Glasgow Rangers wanted me, I immediately accepted the offer,” he revealed in an interview with the Rangers channel who paid 24.4 million DH (2.36 million euros) to secure his services.
A significant investment for a 22-year-old player, whose integration was hampered by an injury which made him fear that his transfer would be aborted. It didn’t happen. Philippe Clément wanted it at all costs. It must be said that the Belgian coach has an eye for unearthing and then nurturing promising young people.
When he was in Monaco, he was one of the first to have gave Eliesse Ben Seghir a chancemanaging his ascent with parsimony. A strategy which bore fruit and which he reproduced with Hamza Igamane, who first came off the bench before settling permanently in the Rangers’ eleven, once returned to optimal form.
His adaptation was also facilitated by a key character whom he met during a chance lunch in a Moroccan restaurant, upon his arrival in the United Kingdom. A cook, but also holder of a trainer’s license, Abdellah Asname established a lasting relationship with his compatriot by helping him integrate into an environment that was foreign to him, even if Scotland has always been a land of welcome for Moroccan footballers (Achraf Bencharki, Hakim Ziyech, Soufiane Boufal, Yassine El Kharroubi…).
Grateful, Igamane gave Abdellah back his coin by helping him integrate the organization chart of the century-old club. From now on, it is his ambition that he wishes to realize by relying on qualities which have aroused desire on the European scene. “But it’s too early to talk about a transfer,” evacuated his trainer Philippe Clément at a press conference.
An elusive player, in perpetual movement
There is of course his double, then his hat-trick in the last two matches. But what is first striking about Hamza Igamane is this impression of perpetual movement. He is elusive. Always in the right areas, he has an extraordinary ability to escape from the defenders’ marking thanks to sharp calls.
At the forefront of the attack, he has the ability to gain depth, as well as providing an anchor point with his back to goal. As a player, Hamza Igamane’s first touch of the ball is also a model of its kind. Its oriented controls are extremely effective. And thanks to his vision of the game and his football IQ well above average, he is extremely useful when it is necessary to give continuity to the game.
An essential element of the Rangers’ offensive animation, he also has lively supports and confusing body feints, which often give him a head start over his opponents. However, there is still significant room for improvement. In this sense, he would benefit from being a little more selfish at times and having more aggressiveness in the finishing zone. Defensively, it is his positioning which raises questions in sequences.
Either way, he becomes a serious contender for a place in the national team. What’s more, considering its performances in the Europa League, the level of which is much higher than the Scottish championship. But now the hardest part begins. Hamza Igamane must ensure regularity in his performances against defenses which have now identified its power to cause harm and which will leave it much less freedom.
