The possible return of Lionel Messi to FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi could make a sensational return to his longtime club.

The FC Barcelona has had many legends throughout its history. Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta… The list is long. However, when we think of the best player in the club’s history, one name stands out: Lionel Messi. The Argentinian left a deep impression during his time in Catalonia. Trained at the Masia, he rose through the ranks to become the big star and global emblem of FC Barcelona.

However, in the summer of 2021, having just won his first title with Argentina, Lionel Messi was forced to leave his lifelong club to join Saint-Germain. His departure was heartbreaking for fans, as their greatest legend was unable to say a proper goodbye. Today, Messi enjoys Florida beaches with Inter Miami. In MLS, at 37 years old, Lionel Messi continues to show his immense talent and could extend his contract. According to Marca, Floridians would like to extend its commitment until 2026, with an option allowing him to play in Europe again during the last months of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 in order to maintain physical fitness. An option which could obviously seduce his training club, FC Barcelona.

The return of the King?

Since his departure, FC Barcelona fans are impatiently awaiting the return of their star. After his two years at PSG, a return to Catalonia seemed possible. Eventually, Lionel Messi has decided to continue his career at Inter Miami. However, Barça ardently wishes that Messi returns to say a proper farewell, especially considering his status as a club legend.

With this potential future contract, Lionel Messi could follow the example of Thierry Henry, who in 2012, returned to Arsenal for a few months on loan, while playing for the New York Red Bulls. Messi’s age and physical condition will be determining factors in this decision.
