Since its creation in 2009, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has established itself as a major showcase for local football in Africa. This competition, reserved for players playing in their national championships, celebrates the raw talent and untapped potential of African football. As the 2025 edition approaches, we look back at the nations that have marked the history of CHAN and built his reputation.
DRC: pioneer and double champion (2009 and 2016)
The Democratic Republic of Congo got the ball rolling in 2009 during the first edition organized in Ivory Coast. The Leopards, after a remarkable run, dominated Ghana in the final (2-0) to put their name on the list.
Seven years later, the Leopards reoffended in Rwanda. In a closely fought competition, they dominated Mali in the final with a clear 3-0 victory. This double crown remains to this day a feat that only Morocco has been able to match.
Tunisia, Libya and Morocco: North African domination
The CHAN 2011organized at Sudansaw the Tunisia assert themselves with brilliance. THE Eagles of Carthage flew over the competition, concluding their journey with a 3-0 triumph against theAngola.
Three years later, in 2014, the Libya made history by winning the trophy in South Africa. The Knights of the Mediterranean distinguished themselves by their mental endurance, winning three victories on penalties, notably in the final against Ghana.
-Then came the turn of Morocco. In 2018, the Atlas Lions hit big by becoming the first hosts to win the CHAN. Their impressive 4-0 victory against Nigeria left its mark. They confirmed their supremacy in 2020, winning a second consecutive title, this time at Cameroonthanks to a controlled final against Mali (2-0).
Senegal: a new star in the CHAN sky (2022)
The 2022 edition, contested in Algeriacrowned a West African nation for the first time: the Senegal. The Lions of Teranga showed consistency throughout the competition, before facing the host country in the final. In an electric atmosphere Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiersthey triumphed on penalties (5-4), thus writing a new page in their footballing history.
All eyes are now on East Africa for the 2025 edition which will take place from February 1 to 28, 2025 and co-organized by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
