The West Indian Gaël Monfils, expeditious, reaches the semi-finals of the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland

Current 52nd in the world, Gaël Monfils, 38, was quick this Thursday in the quarter-final of the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland by sweeping away the Argentinian Facundo Diaz (78th) in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.

He no longer has his 20-year-old legs, but the 38-year-old West Indian continues to be a player on the world tennis circuit. This Thursday morning, Gaël Monfils defeated the Argentinian Facundo Diaz (78th) in two sets, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarter-final of the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland.

In the semi-finals, he will face an American twice his age, Nishesh Basavareddy, 133rd in the ATP rankings and who won the quarter-final in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, over his compatriot. Alex Michelsen, 41st in the world and seeded No.8.

Failing to still have 20-year-old legs, Gaël Monfils will approach this meeting relatively fresh since he only took 1 hour 17 minutes to reach the last four of this tournament which also serves as a last rehearsal before the Australian Open. The West Indian was uncompromising on his face-off, which he never lost, and took the service of his 24-year-old opponent three times, whom he had never faced before.

The former world number 6 seems to be gaining momentum, as he aims for a 13th title on the ATP circuit, 20 years after his first trophy lifted in 2005 in Sopot (Poland). He has never played in a final in Auckland before. Once he has finished in New Zealand, Gaël Monfils will return to Melbourne, where he now knows his opponent in the 1st round of the Australian Open: his young compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard (30th), in what is announces itself as another clash of generations.
