rejuvenation and training at the heart of the new strategy

In an interview given to our colleagues at MAP, Mr. Jiyed noted that the National Arbitration Directorate is working on the rejuvenation project following a new vision based on the repair of certain dysfunctions, while ensuring to provide all the support necessary for the new generation of Moroccan referees and to offer them the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

Thus, at the start of the Botola Pro season, he explained, “we offered the opportunity to young referees, who were active in the lower divisions, while gradually integrating them, which we succeeded in despite the initial difficulties.

“It is for this reason that I am satisfied with the general level of Moroccan refereeing, especially since we did not record many criticisms during the last days of the Botola Pro D1, which constitutes an indicator important that we are on the right path,” he continued.

Furthermore, he added, the DNA attaches great importance to the training and continuing education project, noting that in connection with the new developments in the rules of the game, “we organized training sessions before the start of the current season, for the benefit of elite, amateur, women’s football, beach soccer and futsal referees.

In addition, as part of the Moroccan arbitration development project, training sessions intended to evaluate the work accomplished have been set up, with the aim of pinpointing certain errors observed with a view to repairing them and evaluate and promote the positive points to improve the performance of referees and raise their level in the different competitions and divisions.

“We act according to a clear methodology concerning the support and evaluation of the work of referees, relying on the important action of controllers”, he observed, noting a “huge” lack on this profile, which DNA is trying to fill by setting up courses to train new controllers.

According to him, controllers draw up reports on the performance and rating of referees which serve as the basis for certain decisions or suspensions, which “we avoid making public so that there is no pressure on those concerned”.

Regarding video assistance in refereeing (VAR), Mr. Jiyed stressed that Morocco is among the first countries to adopt VAR, insisting, however, that it is a technology controlled by Man and that, as a result, there is always a margin of error.

“For our part, we always try to minimize errors by organizing development courses and we can assure that the level of VAR refereeing in Morocco is ‘good enough’ and the participation of national referees in previous and future World Cups is proves,” he added.

Concerning the criticisms, Mr. Jiyed believes that “it is impossible, in the era of social networks, to exclude referees from the debate around the performance of arbitration and this is where the referee must do proof of strong personality and managing the pressure that results from protests.”

“For our part, we try as much as possible to support the referees to help them not to be influenced. I think our referees have enough character and experience to remain sheltered from the effects of these criticisms,” he assured.

Regarding coordination with the various partners in the football ecosystem, he noted that the National Refereeing Directorate maintains permanent contact and close coordination with the different leagues and organizations responsible for supervising and scheduling competitions. .

However, he insists on the fact that the DNA is managed completely independently from other devices and that it therefore works in a consultation logic in the service of national football.
