The 2025 season couldn’t have started worse for Olivia Nicholls. After two defeats in as many matches at the United Cup in Sydney, the 40th in the doubles world ranking had a nasty surprise upon her arrival in Hobart, where she is registered for the WTA 250 tournament with the Slovak Tereza Mihalikova: all her equipment was ransacked during the flight between the two Australian cities.
The Briton expressed her dissatisfaction over X with the Australian airline Jetstar Airways. “This is unacceptable,” wrote the doubles specialist. 160 Australian dollars for check-in, because I’m not allowed to take it in hand luggage, and you deliver my bag to me like that?
The message was accompanied by two photos showing the extent of the damage. “My racket and my bag are totally destroyed,” she added. His post was seen by more than a million people.
Contacted by the Australian media Nine’s Wide World of Sports, the airline offered its deepest apologies to Olivia Nicholls. “We have contacted to apologize and have offered to reimburse her for the costs incurred and to compensate her for the damage suffered,” Jetstar Airways explained.
Then added: “Our teams are working to ensure that she receives replacement rackets so that she can participate in her tournament this week.” The Briton is expected to enter the fray on Tuesday morning.
This mishap is not uncommon in the world of Tennis. In 2018, Gaël Monfils experienced exactly the same situation following a flight between Geneva and Munich operated by the company Lufthansa.
