Teammates in the French team, Manu Koné and Mattéo Guendouzi clashed quite vehemently on Sunday during the derby between AS Rome and Lazio (2-0) after a strong tackle from the first on the second.
A Roman derby doesn’t really allow for feelings even between partners of the French team. Manu Koné and Mattéo Guendouzi warmly explained themselves on Sunday during AS Rome’s victory over Lazio (2-0, 19th day of Serie A). It all started with a strong tackle from the first on the second… who didn’t like it at all. Propelled to the ground, the former Marseillais glared at his opponent before getting up and grabbing his jersey in a heated head-to-head fight.
No “friendship” during the match
Neither player was warned about this situation. Before the match, Koné admitted to having spoken about the Derby with Guendouzi while confiding that the two players would not be “friends” on the pitch. And this was verified with this heated altercation even if things returned to normal. The match, however, remained tense until the end with the start of a general brawl between the two benches following an intervention by Mats Hummels on Valentin Castellanos. Author of a nasty gesture of humor, the latter was excluded just like a member of the Roma staff.
Back on the Roma bench after coming out of retirement last November, Claudio Ranieri won his fifth Roman derby in as many appearances on Sunday. The victory won on Sunday confirms the improvement of La Louve and even opens up a future for the technician beyond the current season. “I would like him to stay to train us next season as well,” said Manu Koné on Sky after the match
French sports director Florent Ghisolfi also opened the door to this possibility. “I hope so, he’s doing a great job, it’s an incredible chance to work with him.” Ranieri’s amused response to the Frenchman’s statements. “He was smart, he said that so people would stop asking him who the next Roma coach will be,” he concluded.
