Last weekend, a gigantic landslide occurred on the Italian side of Monte Rosa, lastingly changing the landscape. As drone footage taken by mountain rescuer Luca Tondat shows, huge masses of rock broke away in the southern area of ​​the summit of Pointe Dufour (4,634 meters) and rolled hundreds of meters into the valley .

“This is a huge detachment that is still ongoing,” Tondat warned on his social media channels. Fortunately, the landslide apparently happened at night, so no one was injured.

The cloud of dust caused by the demolition was so powerful that it rose to the ski slopes, leaving traces. Even the Zamboni-Zappa refuge, closed in winter, was damaged. The area concerned is currently only accessible at the risk of one’s life, explains Tondat.

What is particularly alarming is that the collapses may continue. “Il Dolomiti” was the first to report the events on site.

The Monte Rosa landslide is not an isolated case. A similar incident had already occurred on the same massif in spring 2024. Rocks are also breaking off on other peaks in the Alps, partly as a result of the thawing of permafrost and the reduction of glaciers.
