“I’m grateful to be alive”, Michail Antonio’s poignant message as he leaves the hospital

Victim of a serious car accident at the beginning of December, Michail Antonio left the hospital on Tuesday. The West Ham striker then posted a lovely message to share his emotion at still being alive.

A miracle. Having come close to losing his life in a car accident on December 7, Michail Antonio finally escaped without too many long-term consequences. Victim of a broken lower limb, the West Ham striker will now convalesce at home in London for the rest of the season. Packaged for the remainder of the 2024-2025 Premier League campaign, the 34-year-old Jamaican is simply happy to be alive.

“Every year around this time of year, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I struggle to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I’m grateful for: being in life”, wrote Michail Antonio in a message published on Instagram this Wednesday. “I would like to take a moment to acknowledge something I have realized: I spent so many years taking life for granted. I made plans for the next day, for the next year, assuming always that the next day was guaranteed I saw close friends die, I saw other people face near-death experiences, and even then I didn’t fully grasp how life was. precious.”

“Life is fragile and every moment counts”

Forced to move around on crutches for the moment, and after spending several weeks in the hospital after being operated on following his car accident, Michail Antonio experienced a real revelation during this tragedy.

“What I experienced recently was an eye opener. Life is fragile and every moment counts. I am so grateful to God for giving me the strength to continue and allowing me to still be here “, the Hammers veteran continued on social media.

Before launching into a long round of thanks: “To the emergency departments, to the NHS, to the Air Ambulance, to everyone at the Royal London and Cromwell hospitals and to everyone from the top down at West Ham United. The medical team, the board, all the staff, my teammates and the incredible West Ham fans… I honestly couldn’t have made it through without you. To my loved ones who remained by my side all this time, I can’t express how much you mean to me.”

Antonio plans to return in 2025

After coming close to death in 2024, and after several months of convalescence, Michail Antonio fully intends to resume his career in 2025. There is no question of giving up or hanging up his crampons.

“Finally, to the entire football community, thank you for all the love and support you have shown me. It really meant a lot to me,” the London striker finally said. “I love you all and am endlessly grateful to each and every one of you. Happy New Year – and I’ll be back on that field soon.”
