a double and an assist, Messi delights for his big return

Showmanship. Lionel Messi scored twice and provided an assist on Saturday for his return from injury with Inter Miami in MLS, being involved in all the goals in his team’s 3-1 victory over Philadelphia. The No.10 had not played since Argentina’s Copa America final victory over Colombia on July 14 due to an ankle injury.

You had to go back to June 1st to see Messi in the colors of Inter Miami, deprived of his star for eight league games. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner had also missed the last qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup of the Albiceleste in early September. The 37-year-old forward got back into the swing of things without waiting.

“I really wanted to come back”

“La Pulga” calmly scored two goals in four minutes (26th, 30th) and provided an assist for Luis Suarez at the end of added time (90+8), while Philadelphia had taken the lead from the start, thanks to Mikael Uhre (2nd). “The truth is that I’m a little tired (…) The heat and humidity in Miami don’t help either but I really wanted to come back, I’ve been away from the field for a long time,” the player reacted after the match.

Inter Miami are still by far the best team in MLS, ten points ahead of runner-up Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference and just as many points ahead of Los Angeles Galaxy in the Western Conference with six games remaining in the championship.

“During the year we were really unlucky with injuries, we were never at our best (…) Today we are first with a big deserved lead and, with a bit of luck, we will finish at the top, for what it is worth and what comes after,” said Messi, already qualified for the playoffs with his team.
