The Spengler Cup starts this afternoon

The Friborgs are participating for the third time in the traditional Grisons tournament, after 1992 and 2012. Semi-finalists twelve years ago, the Fribourgeoises, coached since Sunday by Lars Leuenberger, must take advantage of the Spengler Cup to relaunch themselves and attack the end of the championship in the best arrangements.

We have seen in the past with Ambri-Piotta that the Davos tournament could offer a beneficial change of scenery. Will it be the same for the people of Friborg after the successive dismissals of Christian Dubé and Pat Emond?

Already a shock

From 8:15 p.m., Davos, the organizing club, will face Team Canada in what will already be a highly anticipated clash between the two most successful teams in the tournament, with 16 victories each.

The success of the Grisons club acquired last year, after twelve years of unsatisfactory results, allowed coach Josh Holden to be appreciated by the fans. With the pyrotechnicians Stransky, Zadina and Tambellini, Davos has reason to hope.

For its 39th participation, Team Canada hopes to seek a 17th crown. This selection made up mainly of the best Canadians playing in Europe is often the public's favorite. The pride of wearing the Maple Leaf jersey is great for players who do not have the opportunity to compete in the Worlds or the Olympics. Canadians want to end a five-year famine.

The Finns from Kärpät Oulu and the Germans from the Straubing Tigers will enter the competition on Friday. Oulu will face the loser of the opening match, while the Germans will play the loser of the match between Davos and Team Canada.
