Formula 1 | Official: Lawson becomes Verstappen’s new teammate at Red Bull

It was expected: after ousting Sergio Perez yesterday, Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Liam Lawson will complete its driver team for the Formula 1 world championship in 2025, leaving Racing Bulls to become the teammate of Max Verstappen, quadruple world champion.

The New Zealander joined the Red Bull Junior program in 2019 and, after multiple successes in junior formula, made his Formula 1 debut with Scuderia AlphaTauri at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, in place of Daniel Ricciardo, hurt. He scored his first championship points in his second outing at the Singapore GP and completed five races in total for the team. After taking a reserve driver role with both teams at the start of 2024, Liam returned to Grand Prix racing with Racing Bulls and finished in the points at this year’s United States Grand Prix.

“Being named a Red Bull Racing driver is a lifelong dream of mine, it’s something I’ve wanted and worked for since I was eight years old,” comments Liam Lawson.

“It has been an incredible journey so far. I would like to say a big thank you to the entire Racing Bulls team for their support, the last six races have played a huge role in my preparation for this next step. I would also like to thank Christian, Helmut and the whole Red Bull family for believing in me and giving me this opportunity I am very happy to work alongside Max and learn from a world champion, I am sure I will learn from him. expertise. I can’t wait to get started!”

Christian Horner, team principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing, adds “I am delighted to announce that Liam Lawson will be joining the team in 2025.”

“Liam’s performances during his two spells at Racing Bulls have demonstrated that he is not only capable of producing good results, but is also a true racer, unafraid to test himself against the best and to impose itself.”

“His arrival continues the team’s long tradition of promotion within the Red Bull Junior program and he follows in the footsteps of championship and race-winning drivers such as Sebastian Vettel and of course, Max Verstappen. No doubt racing alongside Max, a four-time champion and undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers ever seen in , is a daunting task, but I am sure Liam can rise to the challenge and deliver exceptional results for us. next year.”

So it’s a big blow for Yuki Tsunoda. Racing Bulls should quickly communicate the identity of its teammate who should be, unsurprisingly, the Frenchman Isack Hadjar.
