The 2023 draft has remained etched in the memories of many people.
And that’s normal: when you see a 20-year-old who could have been drafted by the CH having a lot of success in his rookie season, it gets attention.
Matvei Michkov has been excellent since he entered the NHL, and the decision to select David Reinbacher before him goes down badly in the eyes of many today.
But according to Mathias Brunet, CH would not have drafted him even if Reinbacher was no longer available.
The journalist (La Presse) maintains that the Montreal organization would have leaned more towards Ryan Leonard (Capitals) or Dalibor Dvorsky (Blues):
If Reinbacher had not been available, we probably would have opted for a Ryan Leonard or a Dalibor Dvorsky. – Mathias Brunet
Note that the site Habsolument Fan also wrote an article on the subject.
If the Canadian refused to draft Michkov, it’s because there was a reason hidden behind all that.
Kent Hughes and his group didn’t think they were going to avoid it for fun or to cause frustration in town. They made their decisions because they had their reasons.
That said, it makes sense to see Mathias Brunet say that the Canadian would not have drafted the Russian even if Reinbacher was no longer available.
Because if Michkov’s name was before that of the defender on the CH list, probably he would be playing in Montreal right now.
And if Reinbacher was no longer available in 5th place, that would have meant that one of the top-4 players would have slipped to the CH rank.
We agree that here, we must exclude Connor Bedard because he was seen as being the logical 1st choice… But things would have been different if Leo Carlsson, Adam Fantilli or Will Smith had been available for the Canadian.
In the end, whether we like it or not, Matvei Michkov will always be linked to the Canadian for the reasons we know.
And even if some are angry with the CH’s decision, there is no one who has the gift of going back into the past to change history.
In burst
– Speaking of the wolf, precisely:
– There is action today on waivers.
– One last push before the holiday season.
– File to follow.
