Vendée Globe: the Hungarian, adopted by Sablais, Szabolcs Weöres abandons

He was the last of the fleet still in contention on the Vendée Globe. The Hungarian skipper Szabolcs Weöres (New Europe) was still in the South Atlantic when he decided, this Monday evening, to abandon. The day before, its port shroud, an essential part to stabilize the mast, had broken while it was sailing 700 miles from the Cape of Good Hope (more than 1,000 kilometers). Which penalized him heavily.

“One of the hardest decisions of my life”

“This is one of the hardest decisions of my lifeconfided the skipper based in Les Sables d’Olonne to his team, I worked so hard for so many years to get to the start line of the Vendée Globe, with the dream of completing this incredible journey around the world. Withdrawing now is particularly painful.”

At the start of the race, he had already had to take shelter in the port of Las Palmasin the Canary Islands, to resolve sail problems. That’s why he was still in the Atlantic Ocean and very far from the head of the race.

Szabolcs Weöres est the third competitor to abandon after Maxime Sorel and Louis Burton.
