Stade Massot is used to hosting Ligue 1 teams in the Coupe de France, Lorient and Nice have bitten the dust there in recent seasons. It was not a question of safety or standards to be respected that prompted Yvan Cordier to issue this decree. No problem either with a possible disagreement between Le Puy Foot and the MHSC, on the contrary, the two clubs are partners. The prefect of Haute-Loire first wants to prevent any risk of fights between Montpellier and Saint-Etienne supporters, who have clashed several times in recent years.
“There is a strong and old antagonism between Montpellier and Saint-Etienne supporters” specifies the prefectural decree, which lists some of these fights: 2010; 2021, 2023, 2024. It also recalls some actions of Saint-Etienne supporters, who did not hesitate to position themselves on the supporters’ bus routes, from Sochaux, Metz, Marseille or Lille. There is therefore no question for the prefect to take the slightest risk and mobilize police and gendarmes to avoid these unnecessary fights. This means that the 300 Montpellier ultras who had planned to make the trip will not be able to come to the Massot stadium.
This meeting was classified by the national anti-hooliganism division at level 3/5 on its dangerousness scale. The decree concerns the Massot stadium (in the town of Espaly-Saint-Marcel), the town of Puy and the entire Ponote agglomeration, prohibited to supporters from Montpellier and Saint-Etienne.
