Philippe Clement failed to win his second trophy with the Rangers this Sunday evening. In the League Cup final, his team lost after a penalty shootout against their great rival, Celtic. Meanwhile, Julien Duranville and Borussia Dortmund endured a frustrating evening in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund let victory slip away
Earlier this week, Dortmund suffered a frustrating Champions League defeat against FC Barcelona. This weekend, they seemed ready to redeem themselves against Hoffenheim. Thanks to a goal from Gio Reyna in the first minute of the second half, the Borussen took control of the match.
Julien Duranville came on with a quarter of an hour remaining to help his team preserve the advantage, but the scenario turned into a nightmare in added time. Jacob Bruun Larsen, former Dortmund (and Anderlecht) player, scored a crucial goal which allowed Hoffenheim to secure an unexpected point.
Clement beaten by Celtic after spectacular match
In Scotland, the League Cup final pitted Philippe Clement’s Rangers against Celtic. The Gers had the chance to win their second trophy under the Clement era and looked well on their way when Bajrami opened the scoring in the 41st minute.
But in the second half, Celtic hit hard. In the space of four minutes, Greg Taylor and Daizen Maeda turned the tide in favor of the Hoops. Despite everything, the Rangers responded thanks to Diomande, who brought the two teams back to level terms. Three minutes from time, Kühn gave Celtic the lead again, but Danilo, who came on during the game, forced extra time with a saving goal.
Overtime did not make it possible to decide between the two teams (3-3), and the decision was made on penalties. In this exercise, Celtic showed more composure. After substitute Arne Engels converted his penalty for Celtic, Ridvan Yilmaz missed his attempt for Rangers, giving Celtic a 5-4 victory.
