The American Gretchen Walsh, unstoppable during the week, opened the evening with a world record in the 50m freestyle final and ended it with gold and the record in the women’s 4x100m medley relay.
At his side, the first runner Regan Smith took the opportunity to improve the best time in history in the 100m backstroke, after she had already beaten that of the 200m backstroke a few moments earlier.
Their compatriot Luke Hobson set his second world record of the week in the 200m freestyle.
Finally in the final race of the competition, the Russian quartet won the men’s 4x100m medley relay in 3:18.98, lowering the old mark of 3:18.98 set by Australia in 2022.
« LThe number of records is surprising”
A total of 30 new world records were set in the 25m pool at the Duna Arena in Budapest.
“We can think that people worked a lot during the Olympic year and that they are also reaping the fruits of this work now,” declared the director of the French teams in an attempt to explain. “But quite honestly, the number of records is surprising for a competition itself and even more so for a post-Olympic competition. »
“There are still nine for a single swimmer, which is a somewhat unusual phenomenon,” he put things into perspective.
Walsh’s ‘very good week’
Because the queen of the competition will undoubtedly have been Gretchen Walsh, who leaves Hungary with seven titles and therefore nine individual records (eleven counting the relays).
“The small pool works pretty well for me,” she noted. “I’m happy to prove to myself that I can do this kind of thing. I had a very good week. »
The 21-year-old swimmer has so far not won any individual gold medals at world level. It also carried out an excellent financial operation since 25,000 dollars were awarded by the International Federation for each world record broken.

The return of the Russians after the Olympics
Thanks in particular to their women’s team, the Americans largely dominated the medal table with 18 gold and 39 in total.
In second place, the Russians, who competed under a neutral banner, won six titles and reached a total of 10 podiums.
While only one Russian swimmer participated in the Paris Olympics, 28 were authorized to travel to Budapest. This is the first time since the exclusion of the country due to the invasion of Ukraine that so many Russians have participated in an international swimming competition.
