Frankfurt falls to Leipzig and leaves 2nd place to Leverkusen

Eintracht Frankfurt lost 2 to 1 on the lawn of RB Leipzig, Sunday evening at the end of the 14th day of the German championship, and leaves 2nd place as the first pursuer of Bayern in Leverkusen.

The big winner of the weekend in Germany is Bayer Leverkusen, reigning champion. Xabi Alonso’s men signed a seventh consecutive success in all competitions on Saturday in Augsburg (2-0), including one against Inter Milan in the middle of the week in the Champions League.

With the first defeat of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga (1-0 in Mainz), the Werkself (factory eleven, nickname of the club team founded by the chemist Bayer in 1904) returned to four points behind the leader (29 against 33), and set himself up alone as the first pursuer of the Munich people.

On Sunday, Eintracht Frankfurt fell for the second time in the space of ten days in Leipzig. After the 3-0 correction in the round of 16 of the German Cup, Dino Toppmöller’s men believed until the end that they could bring home a point on Sunday.

Trailing twice by goals from Benjamin Sesko (19th minute) and Loïs Openda (51st), they came back at the end of the first period thanks to Nathaniel Collins at the conclusion of a one-touch movement between Arthur Theate and Can Uzun. But they lacked a little energy in the second half, Kevin Trapp maintaining hope for Frankfurt with several saves.

Leipzig took advantage of this second success in the Bundesliga to come back level with Frankfurt, with 27 points each, Eintracht retaining the advantage on goal difference (+14 against +8).

Behind, Borussia Dortmund failed to maintain its goal lead against Hoffenheim, reaching the score (1-1) in added time.

With this draw, BVB loses contact with Bayer Leverkusen, who now have a seven-point lead (29 against 22) while Bayern is even further behind, eleven points after 14 days.

“I’m obviously not satisfied. It was very, very weak, perhaps our weakest performance of the season”said Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin at a press conference.

“I am very angry and disappointed that we were unable to hold on to victory until the end and gave up two very valuable points along the way. In the 90th minute, we have to defend if we want to achieve our goals”he insisted.
