Formula 1 | Is Vowles, the ‘mini Toto’, the best team principal in ?

Former director of strategy and deputy to Toto Wolff at Mercedes , James Vowles has today moved up the ranks to become a full-fledged team principal at Williams.

And he is apparently unanimous: his humanity, his rigor, his strategic vision, qualify him as “best team leader in the pit lane” according to former world champion Jenson Button.

Button also speaks with knowledge of the facts, since the Briton worked with James Vowles, when the latter was a strategist at BAR.

Improvement of Williams F1 infrastructure, fair but firm decision-making by replacing Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto, 0% bullshit speech… Jenson Button therefore appreciates James Vowles!

In his praise, he begins by pointing out James Vowles’ prize for next year: Carlos Sainz, who will team up with Alexander Albon.

“I think it’s an incredibly good pair of drivers, and hats off to James Vowles for pulling it off. »

“He is soft-spoken, as we all know. I think in his role at Williams he has truly been exceptional – and I am proud to see what he has achieved. »

“I worked with him as a strategist in 2003 [chez BAR]so to see him take the reins at Williams, a team with such history – I’m very proud of him. »

“It’s great to see what he’s doing there, to have such a great pair of drivers, guys who have so much experience in the sport. I think these are drivers who will work really well together, who will really carry this team and help it move forward. »

Jenson Button, however, confides that he did not think that his former strategist would make such a good team director!

“No, no. Even when the team announced it, I thought, “Oh, that’s cool. It’s really cool”. But behind the scenes, I didn’t know how close James was to Toto, and he was basically a mini Toto. »

“He was learning from Toto and I didn’t know that, so I’m really impressed with him. And I have to say that for me he is the best team leader in the pit lane. »
