Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola refused on Wednesday to present the current poor results of his team, beaten by Juventus Turin (2-0) in the Champions League, as the most difficult challenge of his career.
“The most difficult challenge of my career was when I was entrusted with this team and I had to obtain good results to keep this position for a second season,” Guardiola, whose the team conceded to Turin a seventh defeat in its last ten matches.
“What is happening at the moment is life, it is something normal. Sometimes there are bad periods with bad results, but we will continue to fight,” assured the Spanish technician , in office since 2016.
“Of course I ask myself questions, but I always ask myself questions, in good times and in bad,” he stressed.
Manchester City is 22nd in the C1 league phase with eight points, one more than Paris SG, its next opponent in January and the first team virtually eliminated (25th).
“The objective is to be a play-off. To do this, we will have to bring home a point from Paris and win the last home match” against Bruges, he explained.
“The difference (between the two teams) tonight is that we missed the last pass, the last gesture in the penalty area several times, but I liked how my team played,” insisted Guardiola who won six English league titles and the 2023 Champions League with City.
The four-time reigning English champions, who have only won one match since October 30, are eight points behind leaders Liverpool, before facing their great rivals Manchester United this weekend.
“Even if the results are not in our favor at the moment, I don’t think we are far from it,” said Ilkay Gundogan.
“During most of the matches, we don’t play badly, we even play well and we create scoring chances, but when we offer chances to our opponents and they make one, it’s difficult for us to react and come back,” he regretted.
“We have to find the trigger, each player must ask themselves individually the question of knowing what they can do better so that the team collectively regains its effectiveness,” insisted the former German international.
