Como puts Bologna in doubt before Champions League debut

Vincenzo Italiano’s team conceded a draw away to Como on Saturday. A worrying draw just days before their Champions League debut.

Bologna, the surprise team of the 2023-24 season, are still chasing their first victory in the Italian Championship: the Rossoblu were content with a draw (2-2) at promoted Como on Saturday, four days before discovering the Champions League. In four matches, Bologna have only collected three points and are provisionally in 14th place. The team now coached by Vincenzo Italiano who succeeded Thiago Motta, who left for Juventus Turin, have come a long way. They conceded their first goal in the 5th minute when Nicolo Casale turned a tight cross from Patrick Cutrone into his own goal.

A return to C1 after 60 years of absence

The Italian centre-forward doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, taking advantage of a marking error. Bologna, who finished 5th in Serie A last season, finally woke up after the hour mark: they reduced the score thanks to Santiago Castro (76th), then snatched a draw in added time (90+1st) thanks to a superb strike into the top corner by Samuel Iling-Junior. On Wednesday, Bologna will make their Champions League debut and return to the C1 for the first time since 1964 against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. Como, coached by Cesc Fabregas, remain stuck in 19th and penultimate place with two points.
