The next Women’s Football World Cup, awarded last May to Brazil, will take place from June 24 to July 25, 2027, the FIFA Council announced in a press release on Tuesday.
The exact dates of the tenth edition of the women’s tournament, launched in 1991 – compared to 1930 for men – and which will be held for the first time in South America, were not yet known.
Brazil won by 119 votes to 78 against the joint candidacy of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, promising to develop women’s practice and reuse the infrastructure of the men’s World Cup organized in 2014.
“This historic tournament will have a massive impact not only in South America but throughout the world, allowing women’s football to take a step forward in terms of participation and popularity,” promised Fifa boss Gianni Infantino in a press release.
Of the 32 participating teams, the Europe zone will have 11 direct tickets, South America three including the Brazilians (automatically qualified), North America and Africa four each, Asia six and Oceania by just one, with the last three places being fought out in a ten-man intercontinental play-off.
