AFRICAN WOMEN’S HANDBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Senegal will face Cameroon this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. GMT, in Kinshasa, in the quarter-final of the 26th edition of the African Women’s Handball Championship.

The Lionesses had an excellent start to the tournament with four victories in five matches. They dominated successively: Kenya 39-9, Cape Verde 37-22, Egypt 21-16, Algeria 23-16. They suffered a defeat against Congo, 17-25, in their last group match. This performance places them in third position in Group A with 8 points, behind Egypt and Congo.

Cameroon, the Lionesses’ quarter-final opponent, is a solid team, accustomed to major African competitions. The Senegalese women will have to show determination and rigor to hope for a place in the semi-final. This match represents an opportunity for the Lionesses to continue to write history and aim to qualify for the final, or even a first continental coronation.

Twelve teams, divided into two groups, are participating in this edition. Pool A, which included Senegal, included Congo, Egypt, Algeria, Cape Verde and Kenya. Pool B brought together formidable nations such as Angola, reigning African champion, DR Congo, Tunisia, Guinea, Cameroon and Uganda.

Senegal, which hosted the 25th edition in November 2022, ranked fourth. This performance allowed the Lionesses to participate for the first time in the Women’s Handball World Championship in 2023, where they reached the main round, a historic step.
