The South African city of Cape Town could apply to host the 2040 Summer Games.
This would be a first for the continent. The Olympic Games have never been organized on African soil, and it might be time to do something about it. Indeed, South Africa has announced that it is starting discussions with the IOC of the Olympic Games to submit a candidacy. Since the end of November, a “think-thank” (a think tank in French) “Cape Town 2040” has been evaluating this perspective.
A study carried out by the program estimates that an application could benefit from 84 to 85% of existing or temporary infrastructure. South Africa had already applied in 2004 for the Summer Games, without success.
“An opportunity for the entire continent”
This time the African country (which hosted the Football World Cup in 2010) has greater ambitions and wishes to unite all of Africa behind its candidacy.
“No African country has ever hosted the Olympic Games. South Africa’s candidacy must be seen as an opportunity for the entire continent.said Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.
If an application were submitted, South Africa would nevertheless face strong competition. It is already certain that Germany and Poland will apply to host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2040.
