Nothing has gone right between Max Verstappen and George Russell since qualifying for the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix.
The tension between Max Verstappen and George Russell took on a new dimension during the Qatar Grand Prix. At the heart of the conflict, a controversial penalty imposed on the Dutch driver for conduct judged “unnecessarily slow” in qualifying, after an incident with Russell.
This decision triggered a strong reaction from Verstappen, who did not mince his words towards his British counterpart.
An unprecedented and unwelcome penalty
The incident happened as Verstappen was driving behind Fernando Alonso on a slow lap. In this context, Russell had to narrowly avoid a collision with the Red Bull, which led the stewards to consider that Verstappen was at fault. The sanction: a demotion of one place on the starting grid.
Verstappen, visibly annoyed, did not hide his incomprehension at this decision: “Being penalized for a slow lap is unheard of. I just wanted to avoid bothering the other drivers at the last corner, but being courteous obviously doesn't pay off”
he declared after having nevertheless won the race.
Lobbying charges against Russell
Beyond the sanction, it was the attitude of George Russell which particularly irritated Verstappen. The latter accuses the Briton of having actively pushed the commissioners to apply the penalty.
“I went into the stewards' room, and I was shocked. I've never seen a driver try so openly to punish anotheraffirmed Verstappen. It's unsportsmanlike behavior, and I've lost all respect for him.”
Verstappen went even further, calling Russell a hypocrite and manipulator: “He looks good in front of the cameras, but behind the scenes he's a completely different person. I can't stand that.”
Verstappen also criticizes the FIA
The incident only fueled Verstappen's frustrations with the FIA, which he accuses of lacking logic in applying the rules.
“I tried to explain the situation, but it was like talking to a wall. At this stage of the season, these decisions are even more frustrating.” he added.
An end to the season still under tension
Despite his status as undisputed champion of the season, Verstappen remains involved in conflicts revealing the political and sporting intensity of F1. If the title is already up for grabs, rivalries like the one with Russell show that the quest for supremacy in Formula 1 goes beyond just performance on the track.
