The World Cup puts Morocco in trouble

Algeria – The Moroccan Professional Football League, chaired by Abdessalam Belkchour, faces significant organizational challenges for the scheduling of Botola Pro matches. These difficulties are caused by the simultaneous commitments of the local Moroccan national team, participating in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), and Wydad Casablanca, which will represent Morocco at the Club World Cup. These two events, scheduled for February and summer 2025 respectively, require a complete revision of the calendar.

According to a source within the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), who provided exclusive information to the media
Al-Arabythe League is required to close the Botola Pro season by the end of May 2025. This deadline is essential to allow Wydad Casablanca to adequately prepare for the Club World Cup, while meeting FIFA requirements. The latter asked all federations to complete their local championships before the start of the tournament, which will bring together 32 clubs from all continents in the United States.

To achieve this, Abdessalam Belkchour plans to maintain championship matches throughout the month of January, a period usually marked by a break in the competition. However, once CHAN begins in February, matches will be suspended for a month, to allow the local national team to participate in the competition in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

This decision reflects Morocco’s desire to maintain a strong presence in CHAN, despite logistical constraints. Morocco missed the 2023 edition, organized in Algeria, due to diplomatic disagreements. This year, the FRMF wants to use the tournament as ideal preparation for the Arab Nations Cup, scheduled for Qatar in 2025. The objective is to field as many players as possible from the local championship to strengthen their international experience.

Morocco has already won two editions of CHAN, in 2018 under the leadership of Jamal Sellami and in 2021 with Houcine Ammouta. These past successes reinforce the ambitions of the country, which wishes to repeat these exploits and capitalize on this competition to train a new generation of competitive players.

Furthermore, Wydad Casablanca is preparing to take on the challenge of the Club World Cup. His participation requires an adjustment to the Botola Pro calendar to ensure optimal preparation. The Club World Cup constitutes an important showcase for Moroccan football, and Wydad, as representative of the country, carries the hopes of an entire people.

These multiple commitments highlight the importance of strategic management of the football calendar in Morocco. Between international competitions and national priorities, the Moroccan League must find a delicate balance to satisfy all parties. This complex situation testifies to the ambition of Moroccan football to establish itself on the international scene, while consolidating its local bases.

La Botola Pro remains the pillar of the development of Moroccan football, and the current challenges, although difficult, are also an opportunity to strengthen its organizational structure. Morocco, with its recent successes, is determined to overcome these obstacles to continue to shine on African and global fields.
