Marc Bergevin would have threatened French-speaking players: “We’re going to hug you… outside!”

According to explosive revelations from journalist Martin Leclerc on BPM SportsFriday morning, the former general manager of the Montreal Canadiens Marc Bergevin made threats to French-speaking players before the start of the season, for fear of seeing certain information leak in the media.

Leclerc described Bergevin as an individual “who was extremely obsessed with controlling information” based on testimonies from French speakers who wore the Canadiens jersey.

“They were in the office before the start of the season,” said Leclerc. It was: “If there are things that happen in the locker room that come out in the media and we realize that it was you who spoke to the journalists, we will hug you… out! “»

It seems that this incisive deterrent strategy, to say the least, only affected players who spoke French.

“The French-speaking players were extremely surprised by that,” Leclerc said. Because it was just the French speakers who passed through the office. It wasn’t the English speakers.”

This alleged paranoia by Bergevin perhaps explains his controversial treatment of the organization’s former glories, who felt neglected and excluded during his reign.

These revelations from the journalist working for the public broadcaster come on the heels of Bergevin’s first interview with a member of the press since his dismissal three years ago. It was with Pierre LeBrun, and not a French-speaking journalist or a local media outlet, that the former CEO of the Habs chose to speak.
