Our Belgian clubs were not far from finishing the week undefeated in Europe. But La Gantoise stumbled in Switzerland.
After falling back into its failings by drawing in Louvain last weekend, the Union was keen to snatch its first victory in the European Cup this season.
And it started well for the Unionists on the side of FC Twente. After the smoke bombs in the visitors’ park dissipated, the team quickly opened the score via Mohamed Fuseini, perfectly launched behind the Dutch defense (10th, 0-1).
A deserved lead for the Union, who had already seen Franjo Ivanovic’s goal canceled a few moments before. The Saint-Gillois continued to take charge, without taking a break. The opportunities were nevertheless present, especially at the start of the last quarter of an hour.
But the troops of Sebastien Pocognoli this time did not have to regret these possibilities. The 0-1 victory, the second away this season after the Cup victory at Eupen, allows them to enter the top 24.
Ghent is dragging his feet
This could have allowed the Belgian clubs to finish the week undefeated, as was already the case before the break. But La Gantoise took another blow to the head by losing 2-0 in Lugano. A few days after the slap received by Anderlecht, the Buffalos were already folding after six minutes.
Wouter Vrancken’s men responded by taking the rest of the game in hand, but the Swiss held on, not hesitating to use all possible tricks, to finally kill the match in the moneytime (86th, 2- 0). The two previous victories, however, allow Gantoise to remain in the top 24.
