The 11th of the disappointments of the first phase: several former great Belgian talents disappointed, a Rouche flop in… two clubs – All football

Today we presented our typical team for the first phase of the Jupiler Pro League. But who says satisfaction, also says disappointment: here are the 11 players who disappointed.

Goalkeeper

A resounding transfer to Chelsea and then… nothing more: Mike Penders excited everyone at the start of the season but remained a summer hit. Since Chelsea spent 20 million to afford his services (surreally), Genk even put the gifted youngster on the bench. We have no doubt that he will restart, but the disappointment is enormous.

Defenders

The first name that came to mind when putting this 11 on paper was obvious: Mathias “Zanka” Jorgensen arrived with the status of a veteran of the Premier League, and was absolutely catastrophic for many months. It seems to be making its mark, but it’s impossible not to make it a flop.

Arrived for 6 million from Estudiantes, Zaid Romero was to become one of the bosses of the defense of Bruges. He barely plays, ahead of the indestructible Mechele-Ordonez duo. The Argentine will get his chance, but is a disappointment so far.

On the flanks, two Belgians and even two Red Devils. Hugo Siquet had arrived through the front door at Club Bruges; he found himself relegated to Club NXT. Thomas Foket had to compete with Killian Sardella; it is the latter who became Devil.

Midfielders

Here again, a Belgian duo in front of the defense: Dennis Praetaffected by injuries and lack of rhythm, has yet to bring absolutely anything to Antwerp and will clearly have to pick up the pace in 2025 so as not to spoil an important season for him. Leander Dendoncker should have become the boss of the RSCA; often forced to play the firefighter on duty at the back, he was very average there, and did not bring as much as hoped into the midfield.

Finally, after failing to launch at Genk, Anouar Aït El-Hadj arrived at the Union Saint-Gilloise determined to finally break through. This is not at all the case for the moment: 6 starts in a row without convincing, and now only one match played in the last 7 in the Pro League.

Attackers

Ahead, another unionist does not bring what we expected: Sofiane Boufal has not managed to find the rhythm until now. However, given his difficult time before arriving in Belgium, patience is required.

Viktor Djukanovicmeanwhile, arrived surrounded by real hype, being estimated at 7 million euros and loaned by Hammarby. Standard thought they had done a superb job but the Montenegrin has only played 4 short matches so far, without contributing anything. A shot in the water.

Finally, at the forefront, a player who manages to be a disappointment in two clubs: John Kyei, arrived at the start of the transfer window at Standard, did not convince Ivan Leko… and was loaned to Sporting Charleroi. There, we saw his limits, which made him one of the many disappointments of the season at Mambourg…
