Chelsea consolidated their third place in the Premier League at promoted Leicester (2-1) on Saturday, despite a late match where the “Blues” lost the control they had long displayed at the King Power stadium.
The Londoners entered the November break with two successive draws in their bags, against Manchester United (1-1) and Arsenal (1-1). They regained momentum and three points after the restart.
The victory at Leicester, where their coach Enzo Maresca officiated last season in the Championship (D2), brings their total to 22 points, one less than Manchester City.
The reigning four-time English champions can nevertheless regain their distance against Tottenham at the end of the afternoon (5:30 p.m.).
On Saturday, Chelsea could have won with a greater margin, without an offside signal after a goal from Noni Madueke (32nd) or an unfortunate counter from the same English winger on a shot from Cole Palmer (54th).
But the “Blues” provided the essentials in particular thanks to Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku’s competitor for the center forward position.
The Senegalese scored his seventh goal in the championship after showing off his power and technique in front of defender Wout Faes (15th, 1-0), before pushing the opposing goalkeeper to make a reflex save, which Enzo Fernandez took advantage of, ambush (75th, 2-0).
Chelsea experienced a cold sweat in the final minutes of the match, when Stephy Mavididi fell in the area, without receiving a foul (85th), then when Jordan Ayew reduced the score from the penalty spot (90th+5).
Chelsea will host Aston Villa next day at Stamford Bridge.
