The reunion of Barça alumni continues in the MLS franchise. Inter Miami’s “fantastic four” will be coached by a former teammate, Javier Mascherano.
Inter Miami is a new MLS franchise, founded in 2018, which joined Major League Soccer for the first time in 2020, under decision-maker David Beckham, president and co-owner of the club.
At the bottom of the rankings during its first two seasons, Inter Miami was able to count on the arrival of Lionel Messi, then on those of Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets to take color. Bringing in the four fantastic former Barça players was, both on a sporting and financial level, a golden coup for Beckham and Miami.
On the field, “The Herons” have become one of the most formidable teams in the championship. After the first historic trophy, the Leagues Cup won in 2023, Inter Miami won, this season, its first Supporters’ Shield, a trophy awarded to the team having won the most points during the MLS regular season, and secured a place at the 2025 Club World Cup.
Javier Mascherano named Inter Miami coach
Inter Miami was therefore the favorite to win the very first MLS trophy in its history, at the end of the Play-Offs, but Messi’s gang was beaten in the first round by Atlanta United, 3-2. In the United States, this defeat is described as one of the most surprising in MLS history.
This defeat and this great disappointment had a major impact on the club, since the Argentine coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino was dismissed from his functions following it. And to find his replacement, Beckham has obviously called on the advice of Lionel Messi and his former Catalan teammates, because it is another former Camp Nou legend, Javier Mascherano, who takes over the reins of the first team. The former Argentinian international and central defender has signed a contract until 2027.
