Quebecer Guy Boucher has found a new job.
The KHL’s Avangard Omsk announced Wednesday that Boucher is the team’s new head coach.
He will succeed Sergei Zvyagin, who was appointed interim head coach on March 19. Zvyagin was previously the goalkeeping coach at Omsk since the 2018-19 season.
The 52-year-old Quebecer was hired in July 2023 by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He helped the team go 46-26-10 last season before losing to the Boston Bruins in seven games in the first round of the playoffs.
After the firing of Sheldon Keefe and the hiring of Craig Berube, the Leafs announced that Boucher would not return behind the team’s bench.
In the NHL, Boucher managed the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators. He has a coaching record of 191-186-46 in the NHL.
This is a return to Europe for Boucher. He has already worked with SC Berne in Switzerland.
Boucher will not be the first Quebecer to become head coach in Omsk. Our colleague Bob Hartley led the team for four seasons and won the Gagarin Cup in 2020-21 in addition to being named KHL Coach of the Year.
