The U20 national team saved the honor during the North African Football Union (UNAF) qualifying tournament for the CAN by crushing Libya (4 to 0).
Facing the tournament’s most modest opponent, the U20 national team dominated the proceedings for the majority of the match against Libya.
Despite several opportunities to open their score, the Greens had to wait until the last quarter of an hour for the excellent Benahmed Kohili to serve on a Lahlou Akhrib plate which shook the Libyan nets (75′).
This achievement will whet the appetite of the Algerians who will double the lead two minutes later, at the end of an offensive movement well led by Kohili who passes to Mohamed Ramdaoui who finds Lahlou Lakhrib who ideally serves Oussama Benatia who shoots the Libyan goalkeeper (77′).
Yacine Manaâ’s foals are unleashed and find the net again through JS Kabylie striker Akhrib (80′). The Fennecs youth festival is closed by substitute Mohamed Ramdaoui, well served by the author of the double Akhrib (84′).
With this large victory (4 to 0), Algeria finished in penultimate place in the ranking ahead of its opponent of the day, while in the other match, Egypt reduced to ten managed to qualify winning (1-0) thanks to a goal from Mohamed Khaled Kabaka (54′).
At the end of these two matches of the 5th and last day of the UNAF tournament, it was Morocco which finished first and won the trophy for this edition followed by the young Pharaohs coached by the Brazilian Rogério Micale who took the Olympic selection to 4th place of the last Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The two selections, Morocco and Egypt, will represent the North African zone during the next CAN, while Tunisia and Algeria will return to their lessons to try to rectify the situation during the next rounds.
