Defenseman William Lagesson saw fit to neutralize an opponent with a maneuver reminiscent of mixed martial arts, and he will have to serve a three-game suspension announced Tuesday by the American Hockey League.
Lagesson, who plays for the Grand Rapids Griffins, actually choked his rival Adam Raska during a match last Sunday.
After a few seconds of pressure on his protective helmet, Raska tapped Lagesson’s vest to tell him to stop as one might see in an octagon.
Aged 28, Lagesson spent the 2023-2024 season in the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks organizations.
He was sent to the dungeon for two minutes for roughness during the sequence.
The Swedish guard will miss Friday’s games against Milwaukee, Saturday at Chicago and Sunday against Cleveland.
The Griffins are the affiliate club of the Detroit Red Wings. Lagesson has yet to play a game for the Wings this season.
He has played 100 games in the NHL with the Ducks, Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.
