The Moroccan women’s Football team will play in a fairly challenging group A, during the CAN-2024 at home, alongside DR Congo, Senegal and Zambia, at the end of the draw which took place on Friday at the Complex Mohammed VI football in Salé.
The Moroccan team, finalist of the last edition in 2022, inherits two highest ranked teams from their draw pot, namely Zambia (level 2), 3rd during the 2022 edition and which occupies 62nd place in the world, and DR Congo (level 4), 102nd in the world. Senegal (83rd in the world) was the second highest ranked team in level 3.
Remember that during this draw, the 12 qualified teams were classified into four levels according to their position in the FIFA rankings.
Group B is made up of Nigeria, the most successful nation in this competition, with eleven coronations in total over thirteen editions, which inherits two North African countries, Tunisia and Algeria, as well as Botswana.
In Group C, South Africa, defending champion, will begin the defense of its coronation against Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.
For the coach of the Moroccan selection, Jorge Vilda Rodriguez “It is a very strong and motivating group with great selections”.
“We are going to play at home, on our fields and we want all Moroccans to be proud of their players and their national team. We will do our best to achieve something great,” he told the press on the sidelines of the draw ceremony. “It’s a great motivation to be able to play the African Cup in Morocco. It is a sign that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation is committed to women’s football,” he underlined, saying he was convinced that the next CAN “will be the best in history”.
Furthermore, the draw ceremony was an opportunity to highlight figures of women’s football in Africa, with the appointment as official assistants of the draw of the former Moroccan international, Fatiha Laassiri, who has become a coach and mentor of Andile Dlamini, victorious during the 2022 women’s CAN with South Africa, and of the Rwandan referee, Salima Mukansanga.
This ceremony took place in the presence of the President of the African Football Confederation, Patrice Motsepe, and the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa.
