The Formula 1 championship will welcome an eleventh team on its starting grid in 2026, the GM/Cadillac team, the organizers announced on Monday, referring to “an agreement in principle” with the American automobile giant.
A new recruit. GM's candidacy was validated by “an agreement in principle” this Monday, November 25, concluded at the end of a long process of exchanges between the two parties, having made it possible to note “the viability of participation in the following the commercial evaluation and the decision taken by Formula 1 in January 2024,” said a Formula 1 press release.
“During this year, they reached operational milestones and clearly expressed their commitment to giving the eleventh team the name GM/Cadillac,” underlines F1.
In addition to the arrival of the American automobile giant in the premier motorsport competition, F1 also plans to “bring in GM as an engine supplier at a later date”.
The American manufacturer announced last year that it had registered with the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to be an engine supplier in Formula 1 from 2028, offering support to the candidacy of Michael Andretti, son of the champion of the F1 world 1978 Mario Andretti, to join the championship.
In January 2023, the FIA launched a process allowing potential new participants to join the championship from 2025 or 2026.
