Zakaria El Ouahdi explains his selection choice

While his profile arouses the interest of Belgium, Moroccan international Zakaria El Ouahdi has decided to put an end to speculation concerning his future in the selection.

A few weeks ago, Domenico Tedesco, coach of Belgium, publicly expressed his interest in the right back of KRC Genk, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday in December.

“Zakaria El Ouahdi? We are studying this option, as is Mile Svilar. However, we must take into account our limited places,” he declared, opening the door to a possible approach.

This statement had fueled rumors of a possible change of heart for El Ouahdi, who, although having been called up once with the Atlas Lions, has not yet had the opportunity to play in the colors of the Morocco’s A team. The absence of a recall to the selection had reinforced the idea of a potential change of camp, provoking mixed reactions, particularly on Moroccan social networks.

Unambiguous

Faced with growing speculation, the Antwerp-born player, from Moroccan parents, set things straight. In a statement relayed by the specialized media “212”, he reaffirmed his attachment to the Moroccan selection with strong words: “I am Moroccan and I will remain Moroccan. You still have to work to earn your place in the selection (…).”

This declaration should allay the concerns of Moroccan supporters, proud to see a player of his quality confirm his commitment to Morocco. However, competition within the Atlas Lions remains tough, and Zakaria El Ouahdi, author of a great performance at the Olympics with Tarek Skitioui, will also have to convince Walid Regragui to rejoin a selection where places have become very precious .
