The next day of the Champions League promises to be hot with a clash between an almost untouchable Liverpool facing a worrying Real Madrid in this edition.
Liverpool hosting Real Madrid at Anfield will be the match not to be missed next week on the 5th day of the Champions League. The Reds are also having a thunderous start to the season with a solid place in the Premier League (5 points ahead of City) and also in Europe (4 wins in 4 games).
On the other hand, Carlo Ancelotti’s team is in dire straits despite a somewhat reassuring victory before the break against Osasuna (4-0). Still, the King of Europe is only 18th in the Champions League after losing twice already, against Lille and Milan. This trip to Anfield is therefore a turning point for Real Madrid in Champions.
The statistic that hurts
It’s not every season that the two teams face each other but all the same, we can say that this Liverpool team smiles well on Real Madrid. Indeed, the Madrid club remains in 8 consecutive matches without the slightest defeat against the English club and we remember in particular the two victories in the Champions League final (2018 and 2022).
Two matches which finally demonstrated a clear domination of Real Madrid who also went to crush the English (2-5) at Anfield last year after being led (2-0) at the break. A success which had been a turning point in the season for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, but later in the season.
To find traces of a Liverpool victory against Real Madrid, we have to go back to the 2008-09 season when the Reds crushed the White House in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The Spaniards notably suffered a 4-0 at Anfield and Iker Casillas (8 saves) avoided a much more severe humiliation that evening.
This is therefore the big challenge facing Liverpool: getting back on the path to victory against Real Madrid after 7 defeats in 8 games with the possibility of pushing the Madrilenians a little further down this ranking. The Merengues, who have won their last three matches at Anfield, however, know the procedure to follow…
