Recently, James Vowles explained that Williams F1 did not feel ready to welcome someone of the caliber of Adrian Newey, who will eventually join Aston Martin in 2025. Grove’s team principal had explained that the fact that Newey not coming wasn’t just about money.
“I want people who believe in our project. Williams was not yet ready to welcome someone like Adrian. We still have a lot of rebuilding work to do before we can provide a suitable environment for someone of his class.” Vowles had detailed, specifying that the engineer could have “overwhelm the team”.
According to the Briton, Aston Martin is in good hands with Lawrence Stroll, who is investing in good choices for the Silverstone team. Nevertheless, he recalls that a colossal challenge awaits Stroll’s troops with a view to 2026, while Williams is more carefully measuring its investments and only thinking of 2026 for its technical and human choices.
“Lawrence is much more successful than me” Vowles said. “He has achieved much more than I have in my life. Aston Martin is making the right decisions and hiring the right people, but they have an engine change in 2026 ahead of them. There always needs to be a time of recognition.”
“I want to follow my own path, and it is different from that of others. What do we have to lose? We are already in the middle. I want to carefully prepare the team for the future, even if I pay the price today. Our investments are well chosen. But we don’t walk around with an open checkbook.”
