His assistant Joe Sacco takes the reins of the team on an interim basis.

The Bruins lost 12 of their first 20 games. Their last loss was a 5-1 thaw at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.

“Today I made a very difficult decision regarding our coaches,” Sweeney said in a statement. Jim Montgomery is a very good NHL coach, and an even better person. He has had a positive impact throughout the Bruins organization. I am grateful to have been able to work with him and learn from him. »

Sweeney recalls that Montgomery led Boston to a record season in 2022-2023, with a record of 65-12-5 and a total of 132 points. The original Montrealer won the Jack Adams Trophy that year, awarded to the coach par excellence in the Bettman circuit. The Bruins, largely favorites, were however eliminated in the first round of the series against the Panthers.

“The inconsistent performance of our team during the first 20 games of [la présente campagne] were worrying, and below the way the Bruins want to reward their fans, adds the GM. I think Joe Sacco has the experience for the players and the team to find a constant effort allowing them to have success in the NHL. »

This is an 11e season for Sacco behind the Bruins bench. He previously worked with the Sabers (2013-2014) and as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2009 to 2013.

“Joe Sacco has great experience and a keen knowledge of our workforce,” underlines president Cam Neely. He will be able to guide our team in the right direction. »

The Bruins will face the Utah Hockey Club this Thursday in Boston.
