The figures prove it, Belgium had a catastrophic year in 2024 with only four victories. The League of Nations will have finished highlighting the problems it faces.
With a third place in the standings, Domenico Tedesco’s men will compete in the play-offs to avoid demotion to League B. But would this demotion really be a problem for the Red Devils?
Back up to jump better?
Like England, who were in League B, there could be an opportunity to revive Belgium at a lower level. “Look at England. They were able to have a certain type of matches to revive themselves after the lost final at the Euro,” underlines Benjamin Deceuninck, the RTBF journalist.
“This can allow you to win matches, to switch into a spiral of victories. Here, in League A, we had the impression that the step was perhaps a little too high for this Belgian team which must rebuild itself and who plays a lot of matches against big teams.”
Competition too tough?
If Roberto Martinez has often been criticized for avoiding big teams outside official competitions, we could see that Belgium was not ready to compete with nations like Italy or France.
And if Philippe Albert recognizes that the demotion could allow us to “go back to jump better”, he would still like Belgium to remain in League A. Facing important nations would be crucial to progress.
For the moment, we do not yet know the opponent of the Red Devils for the matches in March. However, there was a good chance that the official speech spoke of the desire to join League B rather than staying in League A.
