Tedesco out: Mannaert is already exploring foreign options

Domenico Tedesco’s situation seems to be becoming unsustainable. After a catastrophic Euro, the Nations League campaign also ended in failure, culminating with a defeat against Israel on the final day.

A costly departure

The KBVB had extended Tedesco’s contract just before the Euro, which would make his dismissal costly in terms of compensation. Several Belgian coaches are mentioned as potential successors, but according to The Newspaperthe option of a foreign coach is also on the table.

Mannaert en action

The new thinking head of the sports sector, Vincent Mannaert, will have to make the final decision. The former strongman of Club Brugge has already surveyed several foreign coaches to assess their interest. “Contacts were made here and there,” reports the daily.

Three Belgian names in the running

Hein Vanhaezebrouck (60 years old), Michel Preud’homme (65 years old) and Philippe Clement (50 years old) are among the Belgian candidates. Vanhaezebrouck, free since his departure from La Gantoise, is currently devoting himself to his role as an analyst. Preud’homme seems to have turned the page on his job as a coach. As for Clement, he is still under contract until 2027 with Rangers, but is going through a difficult time in Scotland.

A wait for Clement?

Vanhaezebrouck is making the most of his media career, and Preud’homme has made it clear that he has no plans to return to a coaching or selection role. On the other hand, Philippe Clement remains a serious option. His name regularly comes up for the position of coach of the Red Devils.

If the KBVB decided to dismiss Tedesco, it would have to provide heavy compensation. However, it is possible that the federation will wait until Clement is let go by the Rangers before recruiting him. The successful former Club Brugge coach is facing heavy criticism in Scotland after a disappointing season.
