Large stadium in Fez: work is progressing by leaps and bounds

As part of the Kingdom’s preparations to host major sporting events, renovation work on the Grand Stade de Fez is progressing at a sustained and intensive pace. This project aims to modernize and equip this infrastructure according to international standards, making it a sporting symbol that reflects the beauty and history of the spiritual capital of Morocco. These renovations also highlight the rich historical and cultural heritage of the city of Fez.

Supervised by the National Sports Infrastructure Management Company (SONARGES), the work is divided into two phases. The first, which began in January this year, aims to prepare the stadium to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. It includes the modernization of the changing rooms, main entrances and various indoor facilities. The second phase, planned after the competition, will consist of removing the athletics track, lowering the level of the field, covering it completely, modernizing the parking lots and increasing their capacity. All work is expected to be completed by 2028.

To date, a large part of the glass facade, a distinctive element of the stadium, has already been finalized. This facade will bring natural lighting inside during the day. Exterior improvements also include the temporary installation of fabric covering to protect the construction site from the elements. At the same time, the surroundings of the stadium are being developed to accommodate green spaces, reinforcing the natural aesthetics of the site.

According to the application file, the capacity of the stadium will increase from 45,000 to 49,200 seats, with the possibility of extending to 55,800 seats. By 2030, the Grand Stade de Fez will become the fourth largest stadium in the Kingdom. The removal of the athletics track and the lowering of the pitch will provide better visual comfort for spectators. The full coverage of the stadium will also ensure its compliance with FIFA standards.

As a reminder, Morocco has proposed six stadiums as part of its joint candidacy with Spain and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup. These are the Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane (near Casablanca), the Prince Sports Complex Moulay Abdallah from Rabat, as well as stadiums in Tangier, Marrakech, Agadir and therefore Fez.
