ASSE will host Montpellier next Saturday. President Laurent Nicollin spoke on the Super Moscato Show on RMC. He comments on complicated news in Ligue 1.
Laurent Nicollin (President of the MHSC): “We are frustrated, because we cannot say that we are approaching the 50th anniversary of the club well while being last in Ligue 1. This anniversary will be a great moment. This will help unite. We come from the world of trash. We know the values of work and sharing in Montpellier. We know how to get up early. My father always supported these values. We are the only French club where the one and same family manages it. Only Juventus is similar to us on this point. That's not why it's good. But it is our history and our culture. We try to wear our colors in the best possible way. We want to hang on as long as possible to cope with our state of mind.”
Montpellier struggles in Ligue 1
Laurent Nicollin (President of the MHSC): “Sometimes the situation makes it easier to change a coach than several players. I did not thank Michel Der Zakarian with joy. But sometimes it's better to cut off your arm than your head. I will have satisfaction when we are fourteenth in Ligue 1 and we have lifted our heads above water. For the moment, the situation is not easy. We're hanging in there, but there will be better days. […] If we want to survive, we need a new tool. A new stadium would allow us to welcome our supporters with much more comfort than today. Lille, Lyon and Nice have changed stadiums, don't be obtuse.”
French football set to revolutionize itself?
Laurent Nicollin (President of the MHSC): “The situation of French football? There are many things that could make us more visible. I think Ligue 1 is watched since there is a lot of IPTV. Which proves that people are watching. The State must fight against this scourge and we will see if BeIN and DAZN will have more subscribers. There's always the risk when you go on a private channel of being seen less. No longer on Canal +, it is certain that Ligue 1 is losing visibility. There are people smarter than me who think about the subject. They had to study the question.
The future of DAZN? If there are not enough subscribers, we will have to think about how we can bring Ligue 1 back to people. That the League creates its own channel to televise French football. Or on Canal. These will be things that we will have to discuss in the months to come. We need to think about another way of producing football. But there are certainly more football fans in Italy, Germany, England and Spain than in France. We know this delta. We will have to think about whether we should put a new system in place if DAZN does not have the necessary number of subscribers in December 2025.”
