England did not stumble in the final stretch towards the rise in Nations League A. The Three Lions crushed Ireland a few days after regaining the lead of their group.
This was the most worrying possibility for the Red Devils: that things remained as they were before this international break, and that England would therefore be among the play-offs for the Nations League A.
The Three Lions were the potential scarecrow of these upcoming playoffs in March, to which Belgium seems doomed. It remained to be seen whether they would finish well in second place, while they were tied on points with Greece.
But England took their destiny back into their own hands by winning in Greece in their 5th group match, returning to the top of group 2 at the last minute with one day remaining. And this Sunday, England hosted Ireland with a clear objective: victory.
In this derby, the English unfolded, scoring 5 goals in the second half (5-0) and therefore leaving no hope to Greece who, for their part, did the job on the road to Finland (0-2). It is therefore indeed the 2004 European champions who will be the play-offs.
Greece would not be easy, however, having visibly rebuilt something in this campaign with 15 points taken from 18 including a resounding victory at Wembley. Certainly not the opponent we should hope to shoot.
