Algerian football mourns the death of Hamid Merakchi, former international striker, who died in Marseille at the age of 48. With immense potential, Merakchi left the image of a talented player but whose career was marked by ups and downs.
Born in Aïn Témouchent, Merakchi stood out in the 1990s with ES Mostaganem, where his imposing size (1m92) and his flair in front of goal captivated observers. Revealed during the 1997 Mediterranean Games with the Espoirs team, he aroused admiration, notably that of Georges Weah, who would have considered recommending him to AC Milan.

Top scorer in the Algerian championship in 1997-1998, he flew to Turkey, where he spent two seasons at Gençlerbirliği SK (26 matches, 8 goals). Despite his undeniable talent, he has not fully confirmed the hopes placed on him. After returning to Algeria, he played for several prestigious clubs, including MC Alger and WA Tlemcen. With the Greens, he scored in each of his four selections, including decisive goals against Liberia and Uganda in the CAN 2000 qualifiers.

A player with a fiery character and an eventful lifestyle, Merakchi himself admitted to having wasted part of his career. Despite this, he left his mark with his raw talent. May he rest in peace.
